OTHER
AMENDMENTS
Soil amendments are usually single purpose products that address a specific soil
problem. They are normally used when there is a major soil deficiency or
imbalance to be overcome or to address a specific problem during the growing
season. Fertrell carries an outstanding selection of these soil amendments. Some
of them are used in our blended fertilizers. Fertrell has the expertise to
consult with you on the use of these products and make recommendations for their
use.
Nitrogen (N) Sources
ALFALFA MEAL is a reasonable alternative to
blood meal as a source of nitrogen and is nicely balanced with phosphorous and
potassium. Its carbohydrates and protein make it an excellent soil conditioner
by encouraging microbial activity in the soil. Micronutrients are plentiful
because its extensive root system provides them to the plant from deep below the
earth's surface. Typical Analysis: 2.5-3% N based on protein. 3 lb, 50 lb Bag
BLOOD MEAL is a fast release source of
organic nitrogen. It should only be used on plants that have a high nitrogen
requirement. It may also be used in compost piles to increase the speed of the
decomposition process. Tends to act as a deer repellent. Typical Analysis:
12-0-0. 50 lb Bag
CHILEAN NITRATE is a mined natural source of nitrogen from Chile.
It is quite water soluble and therefore readily available. Typical Analysis:
16-0-0. 50 Lb Bag
COTTONSEED MEAL is an excellent slow release organic source of
nitrogen for acid loving plants because of its low pH. Typical Analysis: 6-2-1.

FISH MEAL is an excellent source of organic nitrogen and
phosphorous. It is high in carbohydrates and protein which will stimulate
biological activity in the soil and increase tilth. The nutrients are released
through microbial activity in the soil. Thus it is long lasting and does not
leach. Typical Analysis: 9-3-1. 50 Lb Bag
FEATHER MEAL is an ideal source of nitrogen for all crops
requiring a steady long lasting supply of that element. The product is not very
water soluble, therefore leaching away from crops is almost nonexistent. The
nitrogen is made plant available through microbial activity. Typical Analysis:

Phosphorous (P) Sources
BONE MEAL, STEAMED is an excellent source
of plant available phosphorous. It also contains a minor amount of nitrogen and
a large amount of calcium. This product can be used for general application or
as a starter fertilizer for new plantings or transplants. Typical Analysis:

FLORIDA ROCK PHOSPHATE is an excellent source of phosphorous,
calcium and essential trace elements. Florida Rock Phosphate is a high carbon
rock phosphate that has approximately one fifth the neutralizing power of lime.
It releases best at a lower pH so apply before liming. 50 Lb Bag
CAL PHOS is a valuable tool when soils show deficiencies of
calcium and phosphate. It is available in granular as well as pulverized form.

Potassium (K) Sources
JERSEY GREENSAND is mined from naturally
occurring deposits in New Jersey. It is an iron-potassium silicate that is
excellent at loosening clay soils. Known for its moisture holding capacity (10
x), and the 30+ trace minerals it contains, it becomes a premiere soil
conditioner for all agricultural and horticultural applications. OMRI 10 lb, 50

SULFATE OF POTASH is a potassium and sulfur product used in
potassium deficient soils. Typical Analysis: 00-50-20S. 50 Lb Bag
SUL-PO-MAG is a soluble sulfate of potash-magnesia. It is a
crushed mineral that will not alter the soil pH. Apply where magnesium and
potassium are deficient and calcium is abundant. Typical Analysis: 0-0-22-
22S-18 Mg 50 lb Bag

Other Soil Amendments
ARAGONITE is a sea calcium that is
exceptionally high in calcium and low in magnesium. Many soils have had dolomite
lime added for years and the magnesium may be tying up other nutrients in the
soil. Gypsum and aragonite should be used to off set a high mag content soil.
Typical Analysis: 0-0-0-39 Ca. 50 lb Bag
AZOMITE. Trace mineral fertilizer is a complex of naturally
occurring minerals which contains essential elements (micro-nutrients) for plant
growth. Azomite can improve soils that have been depleted of important minerals
and micronutrients. It is 100% natural with no additives, synthetics or
fillers. It is also an excellent anticaking agent for feeds. Available in
micronized and granular form. OMRI 44 lb Bag
DEHYDRATED CHICKEN MANURE (LAYER) An excellent source of nitrogen,
phosphorous and potassium and trace elements. It is an extremely good source of
organic matter. Typical Analysis: 3-5-4. 50 lb Bag
CRAB MEAL. A potent organic fertilizer derived from the Blue Crab
after 40% of the crab meat has been removed. Shells are kiln dried and
pulverized into a beige colored meal. NPK averages 5-2-5 with over 13% natural
calcium, which virtually eliminates blossom-end rot in tomatoes and peppers.
Over 30 trace elements and vitamins. Apply 5 Ibs. per 45-60 feet of garden row
or 2 tablespoons per 1 gallon pot. 50 lb Bag
GreatGrow VERMICOMPOST TEA GRANULES. An all-natural, dry
application of vermicompost's beneficial microbes. Designed for the sustainable,
long-term enhancement of plants and soil. 5 lb, 50 lb Bag
GYPSUM (CALCIUM SULFATE) is an outstanding soil supplement for
soil lacking calcium, but the pH is adequate or high. Gypsum will loosen the
soil, encourage soil life, and add the needed calcium. Calcium also acts as a
weed deterrent as most weeds prefer acid soils. The sulfur when combined with
water will form a weak sulfuric acid which will release calcium that is tied up
in the soil solution. This is quick reaction product. Typical Analysis: 0-0-0-23

MENEFEE HUMATE is a natural humic acid based granular soil
conditioner that acts as an organic chelator and microbial stimulator. Menefee
Humate will significantly improve poor soils when used in combination with a
balanced fertilization program. 50 Lb Bag
HI-CAL LIME (PULVERIZED) Use to raise the pH of the
soil and increase the release of phosphorous and potassium from their insoluble
compounds, making them plant available. Use in conjunction with gypsum on soils
where the magnesium is out of balance (high). It loosens clay soil and binds the
soil particles together in sandy soils. In order to be of immediate use and
continue to break down gradually, the pulverized form should be used. Hi-Cal
lime has less than 5% magnesium oxide. 50 Lb Bag
KELP MEAL It has often been said that if you do nothing else to
your soil, apply kelp meal. Kelp meal contains all the nutrients from A to Z. It
conditions the soil, builds soil life, stimulates root development and plant
growth, and retains moisture in the soil. Our kelp meal is dehydrated and
chopped seaweed of the Ascophylum nodosum variety (tidal water seaweed).
Increases yields. Reduces effect of drought, and frost. It's not water soluble
and has to be released to the plants by microbial activity. Takes about two (2)
weeks to become plant available. Request OMRI if needed 4 Lb and 50 Lb Bag
MAGNESIUM SULFATE (EPSOM SALT) Magnesium is a key element in the
plants production of chlorophyll and the photosynthesis process required for
plant life. If soil tests reveal a deficiency in magnesium, this product should
be considered. 50 Lb Bag

WORM CASTINGS A well balanced soil
amendment providing a rich mixture of micronutrients, microbial organisms and
organic matter. They contain an almost equal percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous
and potassium plus calcium, and magnesium. An excellent top dressing for plants.
